Austin Hatch update: Injured Michigan basketball recruit’s treatment ‘going very well’

Austin Hatch, the 2013 Michigan basketball recruit critically injured in a plane crash that killed his father and stepmother last month in Charlevoix, continues to improve, according to a post on a Web site dedicated to his care.

Hatch’s family wrote Sunday: Austin James is handsome as always, and still looks like a fit teenage athlete. Austin’s treatment program is going very well, including Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapies. (He also enjoys a lot of extra massages and PT exercises with help from the family!)

The Ft. Wayne, Ind., star has been recovering at a hospital in Traverse City. He verbally committed to Michigan days before the plane piloted by his father crashed.

Jim Ingraham’s iChart: All-Star game now no better than Pro Bowl

Matt York/Associated Press MilwaukeeÕs Prince Fielder Ñ shown failing to catch a pop fly in the fourth inning Ñ was the MVP of the All-Star game, which was marred by no-shows and players ineligible to pitch.

The most derogatory thing you can say about an All-Star game is “It’s like the Pro Bowl,” which is the NFL’s laughably fraudulent exercise in competitive pointlessness — a dog and pony show everyone wants to get selected for but nobody wants to participate in.

When Derek Jeter, the most honorable professional athlete in the country, decides to blow off the All-Star game, that game has lost all relevance.

Don’t tell that to Commissioner Bud Selig, however. Desp

Rare northern white-cheeked crested gibbons discovered in Vietnam

Image: Northern white-cheeked crested gibbon (Nomascus leucogenys), Vietnam. Adult female grooming male.

Across the hoots, rustles and chirrups sounding through Vietnam’s remote Pu Mat National Park, a dawn chorus can be heard. For the scientists working there, recording the evocative early morning sounds of the forest, this is no ordinary dawn chorus. To their surprise and delight, the haunting sounds they recorded represent a new hope for a critically endangered primate, the northern white-cheeked crested gibbon.

Conservation International scientists used auditory surveying – a technique identifying different species by their unique vocalisations – to study the species found in the near-pristine Pu Mat National Park, on the border between Laos and Vietnam.

Kajima to progress for in-form Hannon

Following last week’s jam-packed schedule, this afternoon’s cross-channel fare is of a far less exciting variety.

There are a couple of competitive jump races on offer at Market Rasen, while the most interesting betting heat on the Flat is a 15k handicap at Newmarket. A total of 16 runners are set to go to post for the latter one-mile contest.

Give Your Verdict, representing Michael Stoute and Kieren Fallon, is likely to be one of the more popular options here. In his debut season last term, the four-year-old finished second on three occasions, before then winning his final two starts.

Despite those successes, which came in a maiden and a handicap, Give Your Verdict is just three pounds higher here, so he should go close once again.
