50 stunning Olympic moments No10: Fanny Blankers-Koen wins four golds

Moments after King George VI had declared the Games of the XIV Olympiad open and the former Cambridge University 400m runner John Mark had lit the Olympic flame in Wembley Stadium, the Archbishop of York, Cyril Garbett, stood to make his dedicatory address.

“When the Games are over,” he said, “those who have taken part in them should return to their homes as torch bearers, not indeed bearing the visible light just carried into the arena but with the flame of goodwill burning in their hearts and continuing to burn there long after the Olympic flame has been extinguished.”

Fanny Blankers-Koen, named the women athlete of the 20th century by the International Association of Athletics Federations in 1999 at a gala in Monte Carlo, was not there to hear his words.

Southend set to snap up loan striker

SOUTHEND United are set to sign Bolton Wanderers striker Jack Sampson on loan.

The 18-year-old, who has just extended his contract with the Premier League side until 2013, is expected to put pen to paper at Roots Hall in the next couple of days.

Lupica: Giant ’88 loss to Jets still stings

The last time two teams from around here played a game against each other that mattered, truly, as much as Giants-Jets does on Saturday was Game 5 of the Subway Series between the Yankees and the Mets. In so many ways, because the game does matter so much to both of them, this is as close as we have ever had to the Giants and Jets going against each other in the playoffs, which means as close as we have come so far to a Subway Super Bowl.

So this isn’t about the way the Giants and Jets are playing right now, it is about the game they play against each other on Saturday.
