Animal Kingdom likely to run in Preakness

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom will be heading back to his home turf to await a likely run in the second leg of the Triple Crown.

He became the first horse in the 137-year history of the Derby to win in his debut on dirt, having run three times on synthetic surfaces and once on the turf in his four previous races.

Animal Kingdom will return to Maryland on Tuesday to begin preparations for the 1 3-16-mile Preakness on May 21 at Pimlico, about 60 miles from his home base at Fair Hill Training Center.

Trainer Graham Motion wants to keep jockey John Velazquez on his colt for the Preakness, and it seems likely that will happen.

Animal Kingdom’s regular rider, Robby Albarado, broke his nose and had facial cuts and abrasions after a spill Wednesday. H

Appeals court sets June 3 hearing on lockout fight

MINNEAPOLIS — A federal appeals court agreed Tuesday to fast track the NFL’s appeal of a judge’s order that briefly lifted the lockout.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis set a June 3 hearing, with 30 minutes of oral argument for each side, before Judges Duane Benton, Kermit Bye and Steven Colloton.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson issued her injunction stopping the lockout on April 25 and denied the NFL’s appeal two days later. The league appealed to the 8th Circuit, and the same three-judge panel issued a temporary stay of Nelson’s order on Friday.

The lockout was put back in place by the owners a few hours later. T

Miami put heat on Celtics, Thunder level series

MIAMI – The Miami Heat piled the pressure on bruised and battered Boston by taking a 2-0 lead in their NBA playoff series with a 102-91 victory on Tuesday.

Quicker and more athletic than the veteran Celtics, who were hampered by a series of nagging injuries, the Heat again met the challenge of the defending Eastern Conference champions and have a commanding lead in the best-of-seven second-round series with Game Three set for Saturday in Boston.

In the Western Conference, the Oklahoma City Thunder slowed the inside force of the Memphis Grizzlies in a 111-102 victory that leveled their series 1-1.

Kevin Durant scored 26 points and the Thunder held red-hot Zach Randolph to 2-for-13 shooting as Oklahoma City bounced back from their series-opening loss to the giant-killing Grizzlies.

In Miami, LeBron James took his turn to carry the load with 24 of his game-high 35 points coming in the second half, while Game One standout Dwyane Wade added 28.

“This is a great team we’re going against right now,” James told reporters.

Moyes: Keep away Reds

Everton manager David Moyes has issued local rivals Liverpool a warning to stay away from defender Leighton Baines this summer.

Since moving to Everton in 2007, Baines has cemented his place as one of the best full-backs in the Premier League and possibly Europe, thanks to displays that have alerted the attention of big-spending Manchester City and European giants Bayern Munich.

Merseyside rivals Liverpool – who have had first-hand experience of his talents – have also been linked with the England international, in a bid to correct their problem at left-back.
