Panthers take quarterback Cam Newton with top pick

NEW YORK – Cam Newton was selected by the Carolina Panthers as the number one pick in the annual NFL Draft Thursday, as America’s most popular sport enjoyed a brief return to normality after months of bitter squabbling.

Fans at New York City’s Radio City Hall booed NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell when he initially walked on to the stage to announce the first pick, chanting “We Want Football, We Want Football” as he reached for the microphone.

“I agree with you,” Goodell pleaded before revealing the number one pick, instantly thrusting Newton into the national sporting spotlight with the chance to earn a fortune if he can emulate the likes of Troy Aikmen and Peyton Manning.

“Man, am I happy,” said Newton, a 6-foot-5, 250-pound quarterback from Auburn University.

“I’m glad for it to be over.

NFL announces plan to resume football operations

MINNEAPOLIS — The NFL has told its teams and players to get back to football, at least for now.

In a memo released Thursday hours before the draft, the NFL said players could resume voluntary workouts at team facilities, meet with coaches and go over playbooks beginning Friday. It also promised to distribute detailed procedures for signing free agents or making trades and other roster moves.

Capitals put collapse in past, advance with win over Rangers

WASHINGTON – Led by Alex Ovechkin, the Washington Capitals dumped the New York Rangers 3-1 on Saturday to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs and bury memories of last year’s post-season collapse.

An inspired Ovechkin set up Washington’s first goal then scored the second as the Capitals wrapped up their best-of-seven quarter-final 4-1 to join the Detroit Red Wings in the second round.

A year ago, the top-seeded Capitals had been in the same commanding position, leading the Montreal Canadiens 3-1 before suffering one of the most stunning collapses in the Stanley Cup playoffs as they lost three straight to be bounced from the opening round.

But this season there would be no letdown as Ovechkin, Mike Green and Alexander Semin provided the offense while netminder Michal Neuvirth turned in another outstanding effort handling 27 shots.

Czech Neuvirth narrowly missed out on his second shutout of the series when Wojtek Wolski scored with 32 seconds to play.
