McCoist – Tie is not over

Ally McCoist insists Rangers’ UEFA Champions League dream is not over after they suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Malmo in the first leg of their third qualifying round tie.

The Ibrox faithful were far from impressed by the fare on show from their side and the players left the field to boos and jeers after Daniel Larsson scored the only goal of the game in the 18th minute.

Rangers must now overturn the deficit in next Wednesday’s away leg in Sweden if they are to prolong their participation in Europe’s elite competition.

McCoist, who is still searching for his first competitive victory at the helm of the Light Blues, was particularly unimpressed by the slow start made by his men.

But he felt the second half showing, when they created a number of opportunities, should put them in good heart for next week’s vital encounter.

He said: “One of the worrying things is that we didn’t start the game well. It was not nearly good enough. The standard of goals we are losing is certainly worrying.

“We created enough chances in the second half to suggest the tie is far from over.

“As disappointed as I am, and we all are, I do believe we can go over there and score, so there is plenty to play for.

“They looked that little bit sharper than us and fitter in the way they went about it.

“We will have to be a lot sharper in the second leg and I am determined we will be.”
